The Car

The Car

It’s not ready!!!

After everything that we read about delayed flights, cancelled flights, crazy lines, angry people, people that don’t wear masks, we got ourselves ready to be patient and understanding and to go with the flow. But so far our experience has been pretty seamless. Lufthansa was very clear in their pre-trip communications that everyone has to wear a mask while in flight and if you know Germans, they are a pretty compliant, rule following society. We’re happy about this as Michael and I are still ‘covid virgins.’   We’ve been vaxed and boosted but still cautious as we can reasonably be.

I’m writing this post from in the air of our second leg of our flight from Munich to Stockholm. We traveled from LAX and now have a 2 1/2 hour flight to to Stockholm. We had typical airline food dinner, a glass of wine for me and a gin and tonic for Michael, took a mild sleep aid and we both slept pretty well across the pond.

Stockholm is the beginning of our long journey where we’ll be traveling in Europe for just under 3 months. We will be visiting nine countries including Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Slovenia and France.

This trip started as an idea about 8 months ago when we were hopeful that covid would be more controlled and less transmissible. And here we are, new variants arising all the time and it’s still spreading all over the world. We’ve decided to take our chances!

As we started our planning and thinking about costs of this trip coupled with the fact that we needed to purchase a new car in the near future, we learned about purchase and pickup of certain overseas European car models. Enter the Volvo hybrid plugin. This overseas pickup program has been going on for a long time— whereby you purchase a new European car and take delivery on it in the country where it’s been manufactured and have it to use for the duration of your trip abroad. Volvo gives 7% off MSRP, allows you to customize your car and also offers free airfare, lodgings in a 5-star* hotel and dinner at a Michelin Star* Restaurant, all in the most un-touristy, industrial town of Gothenburg, Sweden.

We thought ‘great’ we’ll order our car, pick it up in Sweden and have a European vacation in our new car, saving money by not renting a car. Some things seem too good to be true or some things work out just they way they’re supposed to! The car isn’t ready!! We still got our free airfare!

Packing for 3 Months?

I read travel blogs religiously and this year is gonna be crazy. It already is! Long lines, delayed flights, canceled flights, lost luggage, frayed nerves. And here we go, jumping right in. Are we crazy?

For my last trips (to Scotland and Japan) I made a commitment to carry on. There are so many reasons to do this especially now with lost bags, customs, immigration and missed connections. It also makes sense because it’s nice to be a little bit lighter with less stuff to drag around. And you don’t have to wait in line to check your bag, nor do you have to wait at the carousel for your bag to hopefully come down that shoot — and what if it doesn’t? Plus when I deplane I’m ready to go and start the adventure . . .

But how do you just take a carry on for 3 months? Enter DHL. I decided that I’d ship my ‘big’ suitcase to Italy where we’ll be for 5 weeks and have the clothes, shoes and travel books I need for the longer parts of our journey. My big suitcase will be at our apartment when we arrive in Italy three weeks from now.

Myla

Myla

This is Myla, is our Australian Labradoodle. She’s almost two years old and it’s a bit sad to leave her behind, but we know she’s in good hands. She’s going to stay with her Aunt Pat in the desert. In preparation for the steaming sidewalks, I bought rubber booties for hot pavement. She’s such a calm and patient dog that she didn’t mind me putting them all four paws.

Myla is a happy dog, she loves to play fetch and retrieve the ball for a treat.  She loves her toys and we get a lot of mileage out of them because she never gets tired or bored.  So we collected all her favorite toys and 3 months of her favorite food and treats along with a hundred poop bags and she’s off!

A Little About Us

A Little About Us

We’re a couple that enjoys travel for many reasons. Sometimes it’s just for a
change of scenery, to get away, relax, simplify our lives and recharge.

At this stage of our lives and with more time available we are seeking out more engaging experiences. We enjoy travel for cultural experiences including visiting renowned art museums, historical landmarks and world heritage sites. We also enjoy visiting more exotic locations like Bangkok, Marrakesh or Yangon. Have you ever been to a floating flower market or deep inside a medina, how about a gilded Hindu temple? Imagine attending a three-day cremation ceremony that includes a parade, day long chanting and endless incense permeating the air.

One guiding influence in choosing our adventures is that we are very active and enjoy the beauty of nature and being deep in the woods. We prefer adventures that take us outdoors to go hiking, cycling and trekking. We have enjoyed trips to the Himalayas to trek to Mt Everest Base Camp and hiking the Medford Track in New Zealand. We’ve been river rafting down the Amazon and across Chile. Some our most recent and memorable trips have been walking tours in Europe including the Camino de Santiago in Spain, The Cotswold’s in England and The Great Glen Way in Scotland.

One of our favorite ways to enjoy a country is by taking a food tour or a cooking class. Going on a food adventure with a renowned Italian chef to his favorite Farmer’s Market in Rome? This is truly a wonderful way to enjoy a country and its people and cuisine. I dream of Italy, France and Spain.

We find travel can take us beyond our comfort levels and allow us to experience peoples and cultures that are much different than ours. We see travel as an opportunity to learn and grow and see the world through new eyes. We come back with a deeper acceptance and understanding of our world and a deeper reverence for the opportunity to have the freedoms that we enjoy.
